(NEWSER) - Accused Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan may be paralyzed from the waist down, his lawyer says. The Army major has no feeling in his legs, which doctors say could be permanent. He also has extreme pain in his hands. His lawyer tells CBS that though he was lucid during an interview, he faded toward the end, and his condition is still “extremely serious.” Hasan was shot by police after allegedly taking the lives of 12 fellow soldiers and one civilian last week. (NEWSER) - The US soldier who allegedly planned to bomb Fort Hood military base had a disruptive and defiant court appearance today, reports the AP . Pfc. Naser Abdo would not stand up when asked and yelled "Nidal Hasan Fort Hood 2009" as he was leaving, referring to the Army psychiatrist accused of shooting up the base. Authorities arrested Abdo—a 21-year-old native of Texas who converted to Islam when he was 17—at a motel near Fort Hood earlier this week. He was AWOL at the time. More»

Attorneys request delay as Hasan returns to base for military hearing

(NEWSER) - The trial of the Army psychiatrist accused in the Fort Hood shooting rampage may be delayed. A pretrial hearing at the military base's courtroom for Maj. Nidal Hasan was scheduled to begin yesterday, but the defense team asked for a month to "process some paperwork," finds the Austin American Statesman . (AP) - Wearing his Army uniform and sitting solemnly in a wheelchair, the psychiatrist accused of gunning down 13 people at Fort Hood in November made his first court appearance today, and his attorneys won a delay in his case. Maj. Nidal Hasan did not speak much at the hearing, mostly answering questions about the proceedings with a soft "yes sir." The next hearing, at which a judge will determine whether the case goes to trial, is now scheduled for Oct. 4. More»
