(NEWSER) - The Obama administration is creating an expanded network of drone bases in Africa, which officials say will help the US target Islamic militants in Somalia and Yemen. A new drone base is being built in Ethiopia, and the US is already deploying drones over Somalia and Yemen from its base in Djibouti, reports the Washington Post . (NEWSER) - Somali militants linked to al-Qaeda have taken credit for the suicide bombing that yesterday killed the country's interior minister, and the BBC reports that they used his own niece to carry out the attack. The teenager, who had been recruited by al-Shabab, walked unchecked past guards and detonated. Interior Minister Abdishakur Sheik Hassan died shortly afterward of shrapnel injuries, reports the AP. Clashes erupt in capital, elsewhere with al-Shabaab

(AP) - Somalia, working with neighboring allied nations, has launched a coordinated offensive against al-Qaeda-linked militants that has seen fighting in the capital and two border towns involving Ethiopian tanks, officials said today. Kenyan troops were deployed to a border crossing. Dozens have died in the push this week against the al-Shabaab insurgent movement by 8,000 African Union peacekeepers and thousands more Somali forces. More»

Masri nabbed as he prepared to head to Somalia

(NEWSER) - Chicago resident Shaker Masri was planning to fly to Somalia yesterday to join a militant group and train as a suicide bomber but the FBI got to him first, authorities say. Masri—a US citizen born in Alabama—discussed his travel plans and his desire to blow up "infidels" with a work colleague who was actually an FBI informant who had been ordered to befriend him, the Chicago Tribune reports. Virginia man nabbed before flight to Uganda

(NEWSER) - A Virginia man who threatened South Park creators for mocking Mohammad has been busted and charged with supporting a terrorist organization. Zachary Chesser, 20, was nabbed as he was about to board a flight to Africa, where he planned to join the al-Qaeda-linked group al-Shabab, according to law enforcement authorities. Chesser has been monitored by the FBI for over a year since posting disturbing messages on RevolutionMuslim.com, including threats against the creators of South Park for a planned spring episode mocking Mohammad.
