(NEWSER) - It’s a good time to be an entry-level federal worker, according to a new USA Today analysis: Starting pay is much higher today than it was for the same positions in years past. For example, the average salary for a 20- to 24-year-old government auto mechanic was $46,427 this year; five years ago, it was $36,750. For a 30- to 34-year-old lawyer, the average starting salary was $101,045, compared to $79,177 five years ago. Twenty-two percent of federal workers now earn $100,000 or more, up from 12% in 2006. Returning service members file large number of complaints against government

(NEWSER) - Unemployment has long been a problem for returning vets, but the Washington Post now reports a troubling fact: Each year, more than 1,000 returning troops say they have lost jobs or been penalized due to their service, despite the fact that such treatment is against the law under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA). And the employer most often at fault is allegedly the federal government. Of the 1,548 complaints filed in fiscal 2011, more than 18% involved federal agencies. "On the one hand, the government asked me to serve in Iraq," says a retired reservist who was fired from his contractor job with US Customs and Border Patrol after returning from service. "On the other hand, another branch of government was not willing to protect my rights after serving." More»

(NEWSER) - A Chicago-based federal employees union is urging its members to put off their vacations, stop going out to dinner, and otherwise tighten their belts in the face of a two-year pay freeze and Washington’s general newfound zeal for spending cuts. And it’s adding that if they are going to vacation, they really ought to avoid states that have moved against organized labor—like Ohio, Wisconsin, and Florida, Politico reports. “The union anticipates more budget battles to come, and even more draconian budget cuts to occur.” said the president of the EPA union. (NEWSER) - Despite the fact that many diplomatic cables and other classified documents have already been public and easily accessible for a week thanks to WikiLeaks , the government is ordering federal employees not to read them. “Classified information, whether or not already posted on public websites or disclosed to the media, remains classified, and must be treated as such by federal employees and contractors," reads the notice distributed Friday, according to the New York Times .
