(NEWSER) - A pair of unnamed Americans have been arrested by Japanese officials after one of them was found in a Tokyo hotel room with a dying Irish exchange student, reports MSNBC . Nicola Furlong, 21, of County Wexford, died about an hour later in what officials are calling a suspicious death and possible strangulation. Details are sketchy: Furlong and a 21-year-old female friend apparently met the Americans at a Nicki Manaj concert earlier Thursday evening. More»

Father McVeigh leaving Irish parish, still says he's innocent

(NEWSER) - An Irish Catholic priest who mistakenly flashed gay porn during a Power Point presentation for appalled parents and at least one child on the sacrament of Holy Communion has quit. Father Martin McVeigh, who shut off his computer and rushed from the room when the incident occurred, initially blamed unidentified other people who also had access to the computer. McVeigh yesterday apologized "for the hurt caused," and for "his failure to check his presentation in advance." But he still insists he "was not responsible for the offending images, and in this respect I ask you to accept my innocence." He's leaving his parish on an open-ended sabbatical, reports CNN . More»

(NEWSER) - A popular Irish priest known for his liberal views has been told to shut up by church authorities, reports the Daily Beast . Father Tony Flannery, who has questioned the doctrine of celibacy, and said the priesthood should be opened up to women, has been told to stop writing about controversial subjects, and to spend the next six weeks in prayer and reflection at a monastery. Company red-faced after St. Patrick's Day shoe gaffe

(NEWSER) - Nike has apologized to any Irish people offended by the nickname for a sneaker released in time for St. Patrick's Day. The "Black and Tan" shoe, released along with the "Guinness" shoe, was named after a mixed-beer drink in the US. But Nike was apparently unaware that in Ireland, the name is associated with bands of British paramilitaries that went after civilians in the '20s, the Irish Times reports. More»
