(NEWSER) - What a find: After receiving a tip yesterday, Harbor Patrol agents in California pulled about 160 bales of marijuana from the ocean off the coast of Orange County. That's more than 7,263 pounds, and agents say the street value is $3.6 million, CBS 2 reports. The marijuana, which was floating at least 15 miles off shore with no boat in sight, was turned over to US Border Patrol. The investigation into how exactly it got there is continuing, the Orange County Register reports. A Border Patrol rep calls the situation an odd one, noting that bales are usually dumped by boats that are being chased. More»

Aghast preschool teachers call police, he's busted

(NEWSER) - How dopey was dad? So dopey he accidentally dropped his joint into his toddler son's lunchbox as he was packing it up, Connecticut police report. The marijuana was discovered by aghast preschool teachers, who promptly called the cops, authorities said. The toddler's parents agreed to a search of their home, and police found less than an ounce of marijuana and smoking paraphernalia in the basement, reports the Daily Mail . Dad John Sulzbach, 33, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and impairing the morals of a child. He was released from custody, but has a court date just before Christmas. More»

Feds to California Pot Shops: Shut or Be Shut Down

At least 16 received letters this week threatening just that

(NEWSER) - Easy livin' at California pot dispensaries is about to go up in smoke. Even though several shops are operating legally under the state law allowing them to dispense medical marijuana,16 have received letters from federal officials warning them to shut down—or be closed. Federal law "takes precedence over state law and applies regardless of the particular uses for which a dispensary is selling and distributing marijuana," states the letter obtained by AP . Twelve letters were sent to dispensaries in San Diego, three to San Francisco shops, and one to a Marin County store. More»

California Pot Shipment Traced to NFL Players: Feds

House was set up as part of a 'distribution' network: investigator

(NEWSER) - A 2.5-pound shipment of high-grade pot was traced from Northern California to the Kentucky home of a Cincinnati Bengals football player, according to investigators. Wide receiver Jerome Simpson and teammate/offensive lineman Anthony Collins were both at Simpson's home during the special delivery, said federal narcotics agents, who allegedly found an additional six pounds of marijuana and packaging material in the house. “They had it all set up to receive supplies of high-grade marijuana from Northern California, and it was being distributed from that residence,” said an agent.
