NASA: We've IDed Most Killer Asteroids Out There

911 of the 981 big ones have been found

(NEWSER) - You can sleep easy tonight. Or easy-ish. NASA today announced that it has identified more than 90% of the giant asteroids out there that could threaten Earth (think dinosaur-killing size). "We know now where most of them are and where most of them are going. That really has reduced our risk" of an impact, says a NASA scientist. And as for mid-sized asteroids—those capable of demolishing a metropolitan city—NASA has reduced its estimate of the number in existence by 44%. But it hasn't tracked many of them down yet. "Fewer does not mean none. There are still tens of thousands out there that are left to find." More»

Space Station May Be Forced to Go Unmanned

Would be first time in a decade

(NEWSER) - The failure of a Russian spaceship, which crashed back to Earth shortly after its launch last week, could lead to the International Space Station being unmanned for the first time since 2001. Russian engineers are trying to determine why the unmanned ship crashed, but they only have a short time to fix the problem if they want to relieve the six astronauts currently on the space station: All are scheduled to rotate home by November, Space.com reports, and NASA won’t allow any astronauts on a Soyuz rocket until the problem has been solved and several unmanned launches have been successful. Huge Asteroid Will Zip By Earth in November

Astronomers excited about close-up look

(NEWSER) - A massive space rock will fly by Earth in November, and astronomers already are jazzed about getting a rare close-up view, reports Universe Today . The asteroid, named 2005 YU55, is about the size of an aircraft carrier and will come within about 200,000 miles of Earth on November 8, notes Space.com . Asteroids of this size have come as close before, but scientists have never been as technologically prepared to zoom in as they are now. More»
