Six states institute laws requiring gadgets

(AP) - Motorists convicted of driving drunk will have to install breath-monitoring gadgets in their cars under new laws taking effect in six states this week, the AP reports. The ignition interlocks prevent engines from starting until drivers blow into the alcohol detectors to prove they're sober. Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Nebraska, and Washington state yesterday began requiring the devices for all motorists convicted of first-time drunken driving. South Carolina requires them for repeat offenders. More»

iBreath taps into growing industry around excessive boozing

(NEWSER) - A new accessory for the iPod aims to cut down on drunk driving, the Los Angeles Times reports. No, not an app that lists lawyers, or one that calls a cab—a breathalyzer. The iBreath plugs into the iPod and, in 5 seconds, gives a blood-alcohol reading. The creator said the device was partly aimed at teens. “They don’t listen to their parents,” he said, “but they listen to their iPods.” More»

24 star served 48 days for DUI, 'never griped'

(NEWSER) - Actor Kiefer Sutherland walked out of a California jail today after serving all 48 days of his sentence for DUI and violating probation, People reports. The 24 star looked "glad to be out," said a prison spokesman. Sutherland did his time in an 8-by-10 cell, spending his birthday, Christmas, and New Year's in the can. More»
