(NEWSER) - The Census Bureau today launched a $340 million campaign to publicize this year’s survey, beginning with the rollout of the Census Portrait of America Road Tour, a flotilla of 13 vehicles that will travel across the nation to public events and tout the benefits of being counted. Also in store is $140 million worth of advertising, including two Super Bowl spots. Some $80 million will target historically undercounted minorities and non-English speakers, USA Today reports. (NEWSER) - In a bizarre twist in a killing that has come to stand for deadly racial violence, it turns out that the great grandfather of Trayvon Martin's killer was African-Peruvian. George Zimmerman was generally regarded as trustworthy by his racially mixed Florida neighbors, who asked him to launch a community watch program last year after a string of burglaries (though few knew he was carrying a gun on patrol), according to a Reuters investigation based on extensive interviews with acquaintances, friends and relatives. He was encouraged by a police officer to get a gun after a pit bull menaced his wife in 2009. He did, and underwent firearms training. More»

Black Students Face More Arrests Than Whites: US

Arne Duncan: Minorities suffer 'harsher discipline'

(NEWSER) - African-American students are arrested much more frequently than whites in America's large public schools, according to the government's largest-ever study of the subject. Among school systems with more than 50,000 students, 35% of arrests involved African-Americans, though they represent just 24% of the student body. White students represented 21% of arrests and 31% of the population, the Washington Post reports. Hispanic students accounted for 37% of arrests and 34% of enrollment. More»

People 'sometimes hold themselves back,' use racism as 'excuse'

(NEWSER) - Herman Cain insisted in an interview yesterday that racism in America isn't significantly impeding economic progress for minorities. “I don't believe racism in this country today holds anybody back in a big way,” the presidential candidate declared on CNN . Many "have a level playing field," he added. "I absolutely believe that." But he acknowledged there are still "some elements" of racism. "It gets back to if we don't grow this economy, that is a ripple effect for every economic level, and because blacks are more disproportionately unemployed, they get hit the worst when economic policies don't work," he added.
