(AP) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who twice vetoed legislation that would have legalized same-sex marriage, has surprised gay rights supporters by urging a federal judge to allow gay couples to resume marrying in the state without further delay. Lawyers for Schwarzenegger, Attorney General Jerry Brown, two gay couples and the city of San Francisco all filed legal motions yesterday asking District Court Judge Vaughn Walker to implement his ruling striking California's same-sex marriage ban as unconstitutional. (NEWSER) - A federal judge will make a major ruling today on whether or not gay marriage is a constitutionally guaranteed right. Judge Vaughn R. Walker, a George H.W. Bush nominee, will decide whether California’s Proposition 8 violates the equal protection guarantee in the US Constitution, based on a 2½ week trial he presided over in January. (NEWSER) - The federal trial to decide the constitutionality of California's Proposition 8 on gay marriage will likely be videotaped and put up on YouTube. A district court judge today endorsed the idea of a delayed broadcast of the trial, which starts Monday, citing "widespread interest" in the matter and the potential for the proceedings to be "highly informative." Calif. Gay Marriages on Hold as Opponents Appeal

Prop. 8 backers ask appeals court to review its decision

(NEWSER) - Legal wrangling has once again put gay marriage on hold in California. A federal appeals court panel's 2-1 decision to overturn the state's ban on same-sex marriage would have allowed gay marriages to resume as soon as next month, but the sponsors of Proposition 8 have asked the full appeals court to reconsider the ruling, reports the Christian Science Monitor . Same-sex marriages will now be on hold at least until the court decides whether to accept or reject the request for review. More»
