Alex Goldmark at Good points out that if not for McDonald's one-day hiring binge of 62,000 jobs, the nation would have had a net loss. "That's what makes today's numbers all the more depressing," he writes. Unemployment Dips to 8.9%

That's nearly a two-year low

(AP) - More good news in February : The unemployment rate dipped to 8.9%—a nearly two-year low—as employers hired at the fastest pace in nearly a year. The economy tacked on 192,000 jobs last month, with factories, professional and business services, education, and health care among those expanding employment. (NEWSER) - Today's unemployment numbers from June delivered generally bleak news and suggest that the economic recovery is slowing, reports the Wall Street Journal . The unemployment rate actually dipped from 9.7% to 9.5%, but the US economy lost jobs (125,000, mostly because census workers' temporary positions were cut) for the first time all year. Employers shed 36,000 jobs, fewer than expected

(AP) - The unemployment rate held at 9.7% in February as employers shed fewer jobs than expected. The Labor Department said employers cut 36,000 jobs, below analysts' estimates of 50,000. They had predicted the jobless rate would rise to 9.8%. The severe snowstorms that hammered the East Coast last month may have skewed the numbers, but the department wouldn't quantify the impact. Unemployment Falls to 9.7%

It's the first time it's been under 10% in 4 months

(AP) - The nation's unemployment rate fell unexpectedly to 9.7% in January, the Labor Department said today. The drop from 10% comes even as US employers cut another 20,000 jobs. The rate dropped because a survey of households found the number of employed Americans rose by 541,000. Overall, however, the total number of people who have lost jobs during the recession is now estimated to be 8.4 million. More»
