Reactions to controversial cover are generally shocked

(NEWSER) - The latest issue of Time is sure to catch your eye when it hits newsstands Friday, as it shows a 26-year-old woman breastfeeding her 3-year-old son—who is standing up. At least two commentators have expressed shock that this is Time, rather than one of Tina Brown’s predictably controversial Newsweek covers. Reactions:

• “It's a bit of a jawdropper … We had to blink, rub our eyes, shake our heads and look again,” writes Adam Clark Estes on the Atlantic Wire . “We can't figure out if Time is trolling their competitor Newsweek or trolling us.”

But 77% say we should be able to

(NEWSER) - Nearly all applicants for US citizenship pass the civics section of the naturalization test. But native citizens should be thanking their lucky stars they were born here. If they were to take the exam, more than a third would fail, a study finds—this despite the fact that 77% of Americans think we should all be able to pass it, and 60% think it should be required to receive a high school diploma. Nearly 200 promised to show up at Georgia event

(NEWSER) - Last week, the city council in Forest Park, Georgia, limited public breastfeeding to children under age two. Today, 200 nursing moms and supporters will stage a “nurse-in” at City Hall to express their displeasure. "Breastfeeding women have to take a stand against laws like this or the laws will become even worse," the organizer tells WXIA Atlanta . Minnesota rep slams breastfeeding campaign

(NEWSER) - Just a few days after Andrew Breitbart ran a cartoon basically calling her fat , Michelle Obama and her anti-obesity campaign came under attack again, this time from Michele Bachmann. The Minnesota congresswoman and Tea Party favorite ripped Obama's push to advocate breastfeeding as part of the fight against childhood obesity, Politico reports. "To think that government has to go out and buy my breast pump for my babies? Eats on Feets connects those who have with those who need

(NEWSER) - Facebook: What can't it do? Its latest triumph: Despite not allowing mothers to post breastfeeding photos, the social networking site has allowed more than 70 women so far to share breast milk. Eats on Feets is a network that uses Facebook to connect women who need milk and women who have extra, Time reports. It was developed by a midwife and a breastfeeding activist, and has already blossomed into 98 local groups in all 50 states and 22 countries. More»
