(NEWSER) - Instead of the Beltway, we should call it the Booze Belt. That's because DC singles are the heaviest drinkers in America, according to a new survey. A hefty 34% of Washington singles surveyed classify themselves as frequent or very frequent drinkers—the highest percentage in the nation. Nipping at their stumbling heels are singles in New York and Chicago, tied at 33%, notes the Washington Post . Topping the list of the lightest drinkers? Surprisingly, Las Vegas, followed by Tampa, Phoenix and Detroit. The survey in HowAboutWe.com isn't a scientific study, and results weren't based on number of drinks. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control determined that Wisconsin has the highest percentage in the nation—25.6%—of binge drinkers, defined as five or more drinks in two hours for men. New Yorker Keith Gruber jailed after showing up with open can

(NEWSER) - Late, drunk, and carrying an open can of Busch beer is no way to show up to a DWI hearing. Upstate New Yorker Keith Gruber—who has prior DWI convictions—was more than an hour late for the 10:30am hearing and had four more unopened cans of beer in his bag, authorities said. The judge asked Gruber if he enjoyed his "liquid lunch," then revoked his bail and sent him to jail, the Middletown Times Herald-Record reports. (Click for another tale of a not-so-smart tippler .) (NEWSER) - It's the day after the big night. Which cities are likely waking up with the gnarliest hangovers? By combining stats on average monthly alcohol consumption, binge drinking levels, and number of deaths from alcoholic liver disease, the Daily Beast came up with a list of the 40 drunkest cities ... and notes that they're disproportionally in parts of the US that see coooold winters:

1. Milwaukee: Takes the top slot thanks, in part, to the fact that 21.8% of adults here are binge drinkers

'Giant cocktail party' to gather at Eiffel Tower

(NEWSER) - Paris cops are girding for thousands of drunken revelers expected at the foot of the Eiffel tower this weekend, even though they warned it's illegal. The Paris gathering, organized via Facebook, will be the latest in a series of 58 mass drunkathons or "apéros géants" that are giving police nightmares across France. One drunken reveler plunged to his death from a bridge in Nantes last week at a tipsy gathering of 10,000. More»

(NEWSER) - Kiefer Sutherland is known for drunken antics like head-butting a guy and racking up a $700 bar tab by 1pm . Add yesterday’s story to his list: The 24 star was drunk, of course, and by 4am had managed to lose his shirt and get unceremoniously tossed out the back door of a London strip club.
