Dow off 170 midday on European credit woes

(Newser) – Stocks regained their opening levels after severe losses that saw the Dow off 170 points at midday today. Despite better-than-expected US employment figures, worries about the creditworthiness of some troubled European nations exerted downward pressure on stocks, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Unemployment rate holds at 9.7%

(NEWSER) - A better-than-expected jobs report fueled a rally in stocks to close out the week. Nonfarm payrolls fell by 36,000 in February, far less than the predicted level of 75,000, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The Dow gained 122.06 points to close at 10,566.20.
The Nasdaq picked up 334.04, settling at 2,326.35.
The S&P 500 added 15.72, closing at 1,138.69.

(NEWSER) - Stocks spent most of the day down modestly but pulled up sharply at the close, as traders proved relatively unmoved by disappointing December unemployment figures, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The Dow rose 11.33 points to close at 10,618.19.
The Nasdaq added 17.12, closing at 2,317.17.
The S&P 500 gained 3.29 to settle at 1,144.98.

Oil hits $70.47, a 2-month low

(NEWSER) - Stocks posted solid gains today following a weekly jobs report that showed a boost in initial unemployment filings but a fall in the number of claims lasting longer than 1 week, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The Dow rose 68.78 points to close at 10,405.83.
The Nasdaq added 7.13, settling at 2,199.86.
The S&P 500 gained 6.40, closing at 1,102.35.

Dow Climbs 79 on AIG Deal

Manufacturing employment rises

(NEWSER) - News of Prudential's agreement to buy AIG's Asia division sowed confidence on Wall Street today. Stocks rose, boosted as well by a jump in manufacturing employment, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The Dow rose 78.53 points to close at 10,403.79.
The Nasdaq added 35.31, closing at 2,273.57.
The S&P 500 gained 11.22 to settle at 1,115.71.

Indexes Hit 2009 Highs; Dow Closes Up 54

Jobless numbers, metals sector spark wide rally

(NEWSER) - The major stock exchanges hit highs for the year today as traders reacted positively to news that new jobless claims grew less than projected. Health care was the only sector showing broad losses, a reaction to the Senate's passage of the health care bill, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The Dow climbed 53.66 points to end the abbreviated session at 10,520.10.
The Nasdaq picked up 16.05, closing at 2,285.6.
The S&P 500 gained 5.89 to wrap up at 1,126.48.
