(AP) - Richard Shelby has decided to release the holds he's been using to block more than 70 Obama nominees in hopes of scoring two lucrative projects for his home state. Republicans will filibuster

(NEWSER) - The Senate will hold a vote to begin debate on President Obama's jobs bill today, but Republicans are likely to filibuster the measure, denying it the 60 votes it needs, the AP reports. Republicans have been signaling their opposition, likening the bill to 2009's stimulus, which Republicans regard as a failed endeavor. "It's not a jobs bill. In our view, it's another stimulus bill," Mitch McConnell said last week. "I don't think it'll pass and I don't think it should." More»

Democrats Defy Reid, Keep Financial Debate Going

They want tougher amendments

(NEWSER) - Harry Reid had to fight with Republicans to begin debate on financial reform, and now he's got to fight fellow Democrats to end it. He called a vote today to move toward final passage ("We've got to put this thing to rest"), only to have Democrats such as Maria Cantwell and Russ Feingold turn against him and block the cloture measure. They agree to allow the bill onto the floor for debate

(NEWSER) - The three-day standoff over the financial reform bill is over in the Senate. Now the real fight begins. Republicans dropped their filibuster and allowed the bill to proceed to the floor for debate instead of blocking it a fourth time. Talks to forge a bipartisan deal behind closed doors apparently had gone as far as they were going to go, and when Harry Reid called for the bill to proceed by unanimous consent this evening, nobody objected, reports the New York Times .
