(AP) - Avalanches on a mountain pass north of Kabul killed at least 28 people yesterday, with another 1,500 stranded in their vehicles on snow-blocked roads. Some 70 people have been injured and transported to hospitals. Rescuers worked through the night to save more than 200 people, but heavy snow and the risk of another avalanche are complicating efforts. Military helicopters have dropped food packages to people in some 300 cars and buses stuck on snow-blocked roads. More»

4 US Troops Killed in Afghan Attacks

Death toll for month up to 15

(NEWSER) - Four US troops have been killed in southern and eastern Afghanistan in the last 24 hours. Three were killed by bombs yesterday and today, while a fourth was killed in a firefight. The casualties bring the death toll for the month to 15. October, when 58 US fighters were killed, was the deadliest month for US troops since the war began eight years ago. (NEWSER) - US troops in Afghanistan marked Memorial Day with the words of a fallen comrade—one of at least 1,851 Americans to have died in the war. Marine Gen. John Allen, the leading US commander in Afghanistan, read a letter penned by Marine Sgt. William Stacey, killed by homemade explosives in January at age 23. The letter to Stacey's family reflected on his reasons for fighting in case he died. More»

At least 7 killed in suicide attack

(NEWSER) - At least seven people were killed as suicide bombers hit targets in Kabul just hours after the departure of President Obama. A suicide car bomber killed a guard and several passers-by at the gates of the "Green Village" compound that houses hundreds of international workers, Reuters reports. Other attackers then stormed the compound and fought security forces, Afghan officials tell the AP . At least 17 people were injured, mostly children on their way to school. More»

Afghan Forces: We Foiled Massive Kabul Attack

They seize 11 tons of explosives hidden in potato truck

(AP) - Afghan security forces arrested five militants with 11 tons of explosives they planned to use to carry out a massive attack in Kabul, a security official said today. Three of the five men were members of the Pakistani Taliban, while the other two belonged to the Afghan Taliban, said an Afghan security official. He said their orders came from militant leaders with ties to Pakistani intelligence. More»
