Attorney general says state schools don't have the authority
(NEWSER) - A month after new Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell rescinded discrimination protection for the state’s gay workers, Virginia’s attorney general has ordered its state colleges and universities to do the same. Ken Cuccinelli—who succeeded McDonnell in the post—says the schools’ governing boards didn’t have the standing to impose such measures. Gay-rights groups, not surprisingly, reacted angrily, and Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat, told the Washington Post the move will “damage the Commonwealth’s reputation for academic excellence and diversity.” More»
