(AP) - Frontrunner Lindsey Vonn missed out on another medal today after crashing in the super-combined competition. Vonn, hampered by a painful right shin, had been fastest in the morning downhill portion of the event, but she crashed on the slalom and lost her right ski. (AP) - So much for that injured shin. Lindsey Vonn lived up to expectations and won the Olympic downhill today. Childhood rival and American teammate Julia Mancuso took a surprise silver medal. Vonn's bruised right shin proved not to be a hindrance as she sped down Franz's Downhill in 1 minute, 44.19 seconds. Mancuso finished 0.56 seconds behind, and Elisabeth Goergl of Austria took the bronze. More»

Sixth Olympic medal, in Alpine super-combined, is the longed-for color

(AP) - Bode Miller has finally fulfilled his expectations and won an Olympic gold medal, using a blistering slalom run to complete a super-combined victory. After placing seventh in the downhill run, the New Hampshire native skied one of the fastest slalom legs today for a two-run combined time of 2:44.92. Miller has also won a silver and a bronze at the Vancouver Games to go with the two silver medals he captured at Salt Lake City in 2002. More»

(NEWSER) - The men's downhill skiing competition surged out of the gate in Whistler today, but with all eyes on Bode Miller, little-known Swiss skier Didier Defago unseated the American's solid performance and snatched the gold for himself. Defago, which the New York Times notes isn't even the most famous skier with his first name on his team, topped Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway and forced Miller to settle for bronze. More»
