(AP) - Suicide bombers detonated two explosives-packed cars outside Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone today, killing at least nine and wounding 23, officials said. The blasts marked the start of a violent day in the Iraqi capital, where another bombing and a jewelry heist left three more dead and 13 wounded. The cars blew up just outside a security checkpoint on a heavily traveled road leading into the Green Zone from Baghdad's international airport. More»

Gunmen in military uniform seize Tikrit government building

(AP) - Gunmen wearing military uniforms over explosives belts charged into a government building in Saddam Hussein's hometown Tuesday in an attack that left 56 people dead, including 15 hostages who were shot execution-style. The five-hour standoff in Tikrit ended only when the attackers blew themselves up. American troops who were nearby as part of an advising mission with Iraqi forces responded to the attack, and some US soldiers received minor wounds, a military spokesman says. The US troops dropped back after Iraqi forces took control. More»

(AP) - A pair of car bombs blasted through security checkpoints ringing the Iraqi holy city of Karbala today and killed at least 51 people, most of whom were Shiite pilgrims headed to observe yearly religious rituals.
