(NEWSER) - The South is gaining population and power at the expense of the Northeast and Midwest, according to Census Bureau estimates released yesterday. If House seats were distributed based on the estimates, which are believed to be a strong predictor of the 2010 census results, Texas would be the big winner, gaining three seats, with Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah, and Washington each adding one. Snow, rain, and hurricane-force winds wreak havoc

(AP) - A strong-willed winter storm parked itself over the Northeast today, bringing hurricane-force winds, flooding, and more than 2 feet of snow as it cut power to more than a million homes and businesses. Schools were shut down as far west as Cleveland and roads closed as far south as West Virginia. In New York City, 17 inches of snow had fallen before dawn. A man was killed by a falling tree branch in Central Park, one of at least three deaths blamed on the storm. More»

30 inches of snow expected for Washington

(AP) - Shoppers jammed aisles and emptied stores of milk, bread, and shovels today as a massive snowstorm blew into the mid-Atlantic region. Forecasters predicted a record 30 inches or more for Washington, DC—which last saw at least 28 inches of snow in 1922—and authorities already were blaming the storm for the deaths of father-son Samaritans in Virginia. Strongest warm-water phenomenon in a decade drenches coasts

(NEWSER) - The strongest El Niño in more than a decade is the culprit behind the wretched weather bombarding much of the country this winter, from the snowstorms that buried the mid-Atlantic states in December to the rains that drenched California last month. “Ocean temperatures are somewhere upwards of two degrees above average,” a meteorologist tells NPR . “So we have had what we would characterize as a strong El Niño.” More»
