(AP) - NATO forces in Afghanistan have killed al-Qaeda's No. 2 leader in the country, in an airstrike in eastern Kunar province, the coalition said today. Sakhr al-Taifi, also known as Mushtaq and Nasim, was responsible for commanding foreign insurgents in Afghanistan and directing attacks against NATO and Afghan forces, the alliance said. Move could open floodgates for rest of NATO, other allies

(NEWSER) - Pretty soon, every cool kid on the block may have genuine American-made robot killing machines. The Obama administration plans to arm Italy's Reaper drone fleet, sources tell the Wall Street Journal , which will make it difficult for Washington to deny such capabilities to the rest of its NATO allies. Italy would become just the second foreign power with US-armed drones—the other being Britain—and officials say they'd initially use the newfound firepower in Afghanistan. More»

Wayward strike further strains Afghan relations

(NEWSER) - A family of eight was killed in a coalition airstrike in eastern Afghanistan late last night, in the latest strain on US-Afghanistan relations, reports al-Jazeera . Local government officials said the man, his wife, and their six children were not affiliated with any anti-government group. "This man had no connection to the Taliban or any other terrorist group," said an official. A coalition spokesman said they were looking into the incident. More»

(AP) - President Obama and leaders around the globe locked in place an Afghanistan exit path today that will still keep their troops fighting and dying there for two more years, acknowledging there never will be point at which they can say, "This is all done." Obama, presiding over a 50-nation war coalition summit in his hometown, summed up the mood by saying the Afghanistan that will be left behind will be stable enough for them to depart—essentially good enough after a decade of war—but still loaded with troubles. More Than 90 Killed in Attack on Yemen Capital

Al-Qaeda claims responsibility

(NEWSER) - A suicide bombing targeting the Yemeni military killed more than 90 people today, and injured another 222, a government official announced. Reportedly dressed as a soldier, the attacker set off the blast near the presidential palace in Sanaa as troops trained for a military parade. An al-Qaeda source tells the BBC that one of its members was responsible. BBC correspondent Frank Gardener calls it "a significant step-up in the country's troubles," noting that despite unrest in the south, Yemen's capital "has been relatively quiet" since President Ali Abdullah Saleh gave up power.
