(NEWSER) - It'll be a busy week for Aung San Suu Kyi: On June 17, she's headed to Oslo to belatedly pick up the Nobel Peace Prize she was awarded in 1991. The next day, she heads to Dublin to receive Amnesty International's top honor, presented by Bono at a tribute concert; the event will also feature Vanessa Redgrave, Riverdance, and Bob Geldof, the AP reports. (NEWSER) - Burma's most popular political activist is leaving her country for the first time in decades, a sure sign of confidence in the nation's fledgling steps toward democracy, Reuters reports. Aung San Suu Kyi plans to arrive in the Thai capital of Bangkok tomorrow to give a speech at the World Economic Forum on East Asia. (AP) - President Obama today declared a new chapter in US relations with Burma, easing an investment ban and naming the first US ambassador to the former pariah state in 22 years to reward it for democratic reforms. Burma's reforms over the past year or so have seen it emerge from decades of authoritarian rule and diplomatic isolation, although it remains dominated by its military. Obama pointed to the parliamentary election of opposition figure Aung San Suu Kyi as a prominent example of progress in the Asian nation. More»
