(NEWSER) - A gene extremely common among Africans but almost unknown other ethnic groups may be rendering people of sub-Saharan Africa more susceptible to HIV and AIDS, the Times of London reports. (NEWSER) - Alarming new research out of eastern and southern Africa, where both unplanned pregnancies and AIDS wreak havoc: The most popular contraceptive used by women there appears to double their risk of contracting HIV—and if a woman already has HIV, it doubles her risk of transmitting it to her partner compared to women who use no contraception. The study centers around a hormone shot given once every three months, which is the best contraception available in Africa today, one expert tells the New York Times : “If it is now proven that these contraceptions are helping spread the AIDS epidemic, we have a major health crisis on our hands.” More»

(NEWSER) - Good news in the fight against AIDS: The annual rate of new HIV infections dropped by almost a quarter between 2001 and 2009, AIDS-related deaths have fallen, and the world has seen “unprecedented advances” in prevention and treatment accessibility, the UN AIDS agency says. Still, the unevenly-spread advancements are highly "fragile," and global targets haven’t been reached. Lowered risk of minor cuts may protect against HIV/AIDS

(NEWSER) - Circumcised men's penises sustain fewer cuts, abrasions, and other minor sex-related injuries during intercourse, a new study finds—which could explain why circumcised men are less likely to get HIV during unprotected sex than uncircumcised men. Researchers analyzed data from an HIV study in Africa that followed 2,800 men, noting their penile status and STD history. They found that circumcised men were 39% less likely to report a penile injury, controlling for other factors, reports Reuters . More»
