Attorneys sought material to clear Ethel

(NEWSER) - Evidence that could clear the name of Ethel Rosenberg must stay under wraps to protect grand jury secrecy, a judge ruled yesterday. Ethel and husband Julius were executed in 1953 for passing atomic secrets to the Soviets. Her brother David Greenglass, who testified against her, has since said he lied about Ethel's role to protect his own wife from prosecution. But he has requested that his grand jury testimony not be made public. More»

Hiroshima Bomb Pilot Dead at 92

Pilot defended his role to the last, said he had 'no regrets'

(NEWSER) - The commander and pilot of the B-29 that dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945—the first military use of nuclear weapons—died today, the Associated Press reports. Paul Tibbets was 92, and requested no funeral or headstone for fear that they might attract anti-nuclear protesters. Tibbets always said he had no regrets about the mission. More»

Fukushima Radiation Found in California Kelp

'It's not a good thing,' says researcher

(NEWSER) - A major fallout from Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant disaster has hit the coast of California, according to scientists. Radioactive iodine was found in giant kelp beds off Laguna Beach to Santa Cruz within a month of the meltdown, reports the Los Angeles Times . The radiation "represents a significant input into the kelp forest ecosystem," warns the study in the journal Environmental Science & Technology. The levels—most likely not quickly harmful to humans—were significantly higher than measurements prior to the explosion, and similar to readings found farther north after the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. Levels not high enough to pose health risk, parents told

(NEWSER) - Nearly nine months after the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami wrought havoc on Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant, the country's nuclear nightmare is continuing. Traces of radiation have been found in infant formula for the first time and while government experts say the levels aren't high enough to affect health, parents are panicking. A manufacturer has recalled 400,000 cans of the formula, which was produced when the disaster hit in March at a factory 125 miles away. More»
