(NEWSER) - Port Authority police launched a hate crime investigation after construction workers returning from their Christmas break found a noose hanging from the 64th floor of 1 World Trade Center. It's not clear whether there had been any tension among workers at the skyscraper formerly known as Freedom Tower, the New York Daily News notes. The department "places the highest priority on crimes motivated by hate and bias,” police said in a statement. “We believe aggressive enforcement action sends a clear message that this behavior will not be tolerated." She calls school probe a racist conspiracy

(NEWSER) - The Columbia professor who made headlines when she found a noose on her office door has plagiarized from students and another professor, the school says. The university’s Teachers College found two dozen instances in which Madonna Constantine stole from other's works in articles published under her name. (NEWSER) - A noose found outside a New York post office this week is the latest in a spate of apparent Northeast hate crimes, CBS reports. The Jim Crow-era symbols have turned up recently at a Connecticut Coast Guard Academy, a Long Island police station, and at Columbia University—possibly inspired by racial clashes in Jena, Alabama. “We have to be concerned about a copycat being out there,” police warn. Delmon Young accused of shouting anti-Semitic remarks during fight

(NEWSER) - An outfielder for the Detroit Tigers was arrested in New York City early this morning and could be charged with a misdemeanor hate crime. Delmon Young, 26, was involved in the incident outside his hotel around 2:30am. The New York Post reports that a panhandler wearing a yarmulke was asking a group of people for change when Young, who was standing nearby, started yelling, "F--king Jews! F--king Jews!"
