(NEWSER) - The Justice Department is through negotiating with the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America. Authorities announced yesterday that they will sue Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio for alleged civil rights violations, the AP reports. The department had been trying to work out an agreement with Arpaio in which he'd train his officers on how to make constitutional traffic stops and convince Hispanics that they were protecting them, too, but Arpaio balked at a major condition: a court-appointed monitor to make sure he was following through. Hawaii Verifies Obama Birth Records Yet Again

(NEWSER) - We somehow doubt that this will finally put the birther brouhaha to bed, but: After what the AP describes as "a nearly three-month back and forth," Hawaii has verified President Obama's birth records to Arizona. Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett had threatened to remove Obama from the November ballot if he did not receive verification, but Hawaii—which has confirmed Obama's citizenship repeatedly since 2008—first wanted Bennett to prove that he required the records as part of ordinary business. Bennett did that, so Hawaii passed along the verification. It's not yet clear whether Bennett's office is satisfied. More»

'We arrested 500 just for spite,' he says on newly discovered tape

(NEWSER) - If you were under federal investigation for racial profiling, you might take it seriously. But you're not Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The AP has discovered a new tape in which the controversial lawman laughs about his failure to cooperate with the probe concerning his immigration arrests and mocks the investigators. "After they went after me, we arrested 500 more just for spite," he told the crowd at a 2009 fundraiser. He brags about kicking investigators out of his office, and admits the controversy has been a fundraising boon. More»

Joe Arpaio refuses to let DOJ 'run my office'

(NEWSER) - Talks between the Department of Justice and Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio have broken down, and now the feds are threatening to sue over the sheriff's alleged abuses against Hispanic suspects, reports the Washington Post . The Justice Department is insisting Arpaio's Maricopa County sheriff office take on a court-appointed monitor to oversee changes, but Arpaio's lawyers canceled the latest round of DOJ negotiations at the last minute. The DOJ has given Arpaio an April 14 deadline to settle on a wide range of civil rights complaints; otherwise he could face a lawsuit. More»

Arizona GOP Makes New Push for Birther Law

Lawmakers, Sheriff Joe are pushing for a new bill

(NEWSER) - They're baaaaack: Arizona's GOP lawmakers are reviving the birther debate as they attempt to pass a law that would require presidential candidates to swear, via affidavit, that they are qualified to be president—ie, that they were born in the US—before the state will put them on the ballot. "Our ballot, no matter what office someone is running for, should have the highest level of validity," says Rep. Carl Seel, who added the requirement to a bill. "That couldn't be more American, and it couldn't be more nonpartisan." More»
