One killed, eight wounded in two protests

(NEWSER) - Dove World’s plan to burn Korans set off protests across Afghanistan today, and two of them turned violent. In western Afghanistan, four protesters were shot, one of them fatally, outside a NATO base in Bala Buluk. “We do not know who shot them,” said a doctor at a local hospital. “Whether police shot them or coalition forces, it’s not clear.” Details at the Christian Science Monitor and the New York Times . Koran Burning Drove Away 'Basically All' Parishioners

But Terry Jones won't back down

(NEWSER) - Following Terry Jones' involvement in a Koran-burning stunt , "basically all" the parishioners have left his church and he has received more than 300 death threats—but the Florida pastor is not backing down. Even after the resulting protests at a UN complex in Afghanistan left UN workers dead , Jones insists to ABC News his beliefs are more important. "Even at the expense of an American soldier, or two, or 10?" he was asked. His response: "I would have to say yes. Perhaps in the long run, we have saved hundreds or thousands of lives." More»

Koran-Burning Pastor Calls Afghan Killings 'Tragic'

But Terry Jones isn't apologetic that his stunt set off deadly riot

(NEWSER) - The Florida pastor whose burning of a Koran last month set off a deadly protest in Afghanistan today called the deaths "very tragic" but expressed no remorse about his stunt, reports the Los Angeles Times . In fact, Terry Jones said the mob's attack on a UN compound showed that "Islam is not a religion of peace" and called on the US and UN to "hold these people accountable." At least a dozen people were killed— some reports have the toll at 20—when demonstrators outraged by the actions of Jones' Dove World Outreach Center stormed the UN building in the northern city of Mazar-e Sharif, reports CNN . Koran-Torching Pastor Was Run Out of Germany

And his church is currently for sale

(NEWSER) - Rev. Terry Jones was ranting against Islam long before his plan to burn Korans on the anniversary of 9/11 made him internationally infamous. According to the church blog, Jones has been preaching Islamophobia since before 9/11, when he ran a sister church in a poor area of Cologne, Germany. The church says he left because the community had begun to fill with Muslim Turkish immigrants hostile to his message, the Daily Beast reports. More»
