(Newser) - Two major storms are churning across the Atlantic, with their chances of striking the US still unclear. Hurricane Ike has rapidly strengthened to a raging Category 4, while Tropical Storm Hanna is now battering the Bahamas after killing 26 in Haiti. Storm expected to reach Bahamas today

(AP) - The National Hurricane Center has upgraded Hanna to a hurricane as it brings waves, rain, and blustery winds to the Turks and Caicos islands, the AP reports. Hurricane warnings—meaning the storm is expected to arrive within 24 hours—were issued for the island chain and the central and southeastern Bahamas today, and forecasters warned that the storm could strike the US mainland. Cops: Bahamas could be destination for Rockefeller, 7-year-old

(Newser) - The man believed to have kidnapped his daughter after a custody visit in Boston yesterday could be trying to flee the country on his yacht, authorities said today. Clark Rockefeller might have been dropped off, along with 7-year-old Reigh, at New York’s Grand Central Station last night, aiming to get to his boat, moored somewhere on Long Island, the Boston Herald reports. Authorities have been questioning area marina-owners, and searched Long Island Sound from the air. More »

Bahamas panel rules out criminal charges in 20-year-old's 2006 death

(Newser) - The drug overdose that killed Anna Nicole Smith’s 20-year-old son was accidental, a Bahamas jury ruled today, recommending no criminal charges in Daniel Smith's 2006 death. The inquest, which began in November, had already determined there was no evidence of homicide; an autopsy indicated the model's son probably died from a lethal combination of methadone and antidepressants, the AP reports. Hurricane Noel Toll Hits 108

Furious storm slammed Caribbean, but is expected to spare Florida

(Newser) - Tropical storm Noel was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane last night, and has claimed 108 lives, making it the deadliest Atlantic storm this year. The island of Hispaniola suffered nearly all the fatalities, with 66 reported in the Dominican Republic and 40 in Haiti, most of them in or near the capital of Port-au-Prince. More »

59 dead in the Caribbean as the storm takes aim at the Bahamas

(Newser) - The death toll from Tropical Storm Noel rose to 59 in the Caribbean today, with the storm moving on from Cuba and headed towards the Bahamas, the Miami Herald reported today. The Dominican Republic's government reported 41 dead with 20 more missing, and Haitian authorities, who had previously reported no deaths from the storm, confirmed 18 fatalities. More »

(Newser) - Tropical Storm Noel slammed into the Dominican Republic today with torrential rain and mudslides, leaving 20 people dead and another 20 missing. (Newser) - Twin tropical depressions sprouted today in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic, the Miami Herald reports, and both could become tropical storms by day’s end.
