Longoria's two-run homer in ninth breaks scoreless tie

(Newser) - James Shields pitched a one-hitter and Evan Longoria's two-run, ninth-inning homer snapped a scoreless tie and gave the Tampa Bay Rays a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels last night. Shields (4-2) rebounded from the second-shortest outing of his career to post his second shutout in his past three starts. The 26-year-old right-hander limited the Angels to Brandon Wood's one-out single in the third. More »

Blake, Francisco hit two-run doubles to spark big inning

(Newser) - Casey Blake and Ben Francisco hit two-run doubles in a six-run seventh inning to help C.C. Sabathia and the Cleveland Indians defeat Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 in a duel of Cy Young Award winners last night. Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells jammed his left wrist while making a diving catch and left in the sixth inning. More »

Orioles drops third straight despite ninth-inning comeback

(Newser) - Emil Brown singled home the winning run in the 10th inning, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Baltimore Orioles 2-1 last night. With two outs, Daric Barton singled against Jim Johnson (0-1), and Frank Thomas followed with a walk to set up Brown's third hit of the game. (Newser) - Joe Mauer completed a Minnesota rally from a six-run, first-inning deficit, slapping a two-run single up the middle in the seventh to lift the Twins past the Detroit Tigers 7-6 on Sunday for their fifth straight win. A two-out error in the inning by third baseman Carlos Guillen, set up a four-run surge and ruined a strong start by Kenny Rogers. More »

(Newser) - Jon Garland pitched three-hit ball for eight innings, Gary Matthews Jr. drove in two runs and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 today with slumping slugger Vladimir Guerrero on the bench. Only four Orioles reached base against Garland (4-3), who retired 18 of his last 19 batters. It was the first time he got through the seventh since his Angels debut on April 1. More »

Wells drives in three runs as Toronto downs White Sox

(Newser) - Vernon Wells drove in three runs, Marco Scutaro homered and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 5-2 today. Right-hander Jesse Litsch (4-1) gave up two runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings for Toronto, which has won three straight after losing eight of nine. Wells went 3-for-5 with three singles.
