Wanjiru 1st Kenyan to Win Olympic Men's Marathon

(AP) - Samuel Wanjiru pulled away over the final few kilometers to become the first Kenyan in the storied running history of that nation to win an Olympic marathon. The 21-year-old negotiated the 26.2-mile course through Beijing streets in bright Sunday morning sunshine in an Olympic record of 2 hours, 6 minutes, 32 seconds. This was just the third marathon for Wanjiru, who twice broke the world half-marathon record last year. More »

Women Will Never Outpace Men in Distance Running

(Newser) - Women will never run a marathon faster than men, a sports scientist tells Time . Although women have higher body-fat ratios and presumably a larger emergency energy store, females do not have the muscular power that males have, and that may be the "differentiating factor." When matched for weight, men outrun women by average speeds of 10%. More »

      Runners Live Longer: Study

(Newser) - Runners live longer and age more slowly than non-runners, a new study has found. Researchers tracked hundreds of older people for decades and discovered those who ran regularly remained active later into old age and were less likely to develop disabilities. Twenty years into the study 34% of the non-runners had died, compared to just 16% of the runners.  More »

      Gay Is Fastest Man, Ever*

(Newser) - Tyson Gay might have used the Olympic trials yesterday to cover 100 meters faster than any human in history, but he is not the world record-holder because track, unlike any other sport, attaches asterisks to records, Jim Caple writes on ESPN.com. Strong tailwinds propelled Gay to victory, but his breathtaking time of 9.68 seconds would have been 9.86 without the wind. More »

      The Standoff Over Central Park

(Newser) - Central Park is an oasis in the middle of Manhattan, but it’s also an early-morning battleground. New York magazine surveys the battlefield and finds open hostility. Cyclists shake their fists in rage at headphone-impaired joggers, dogs and owners fear for life and limb at bike crossings, and everyone nurses a hatred of cars. More »

      Ignoring the iPod Race Ban

(Newser) - Running purists have applauded a ruling from USA Track & Field restricting portable audio devices during races. Other competitors say music motivates them, which is why you'll still see plenty of iPods and headphones during Sunday's New York City Marathon, reports The New York Times . "If they want to disqualify me, they can," dared one runner. More »

See Jane Realize She Can Run Circles Around You

(Newser) - When it comes to men, most women just don’t try—try, that is, to be as good as them in sports. After examining several running competitions, the New York Times discovered that while men slow as they age, older women were seemingly doing laps around their younger counterparts. One expert says younger women can be embarrassed to act like athletes. More »
