      McCain Spiffing Up His Act

With his small stature and tendency to stumble over words, John McCain struggles behind a podium, the New York Times notes. “The only time I would put him behind a podium at all” during the campaign “is when he’s announcing a policy position,” said his former communications director. McCain is now working with experts to improve his onstage presence, according to aides. More »

Hairy Fad: Boys Dig Long Locks

In what could be a frightening nod to the '80s, more and more boys are growing their hair out. And while most deny pop culture inspired the barber boycott, long locks can be spotted on everyone from the Jonas Brothers to celebrity tots. Despite sometimes being mistaken for girls, notes the Chicago Tribune in a look at the trend, most wouldn't trade their tresses. More »

      Sect Style: Flamboyant Modesty

      Obama, Clinton Tied With McCain

Voters say they'd rather see a Democrat than a Republican in the White House—by a 50% to 37% margin, a new NBC/ Wall Street Journal poll finds—but when it comes to the two Democratic candidates still in the race, John McCain is going to be tough for either to beat. Barack Obama leads McCain by just 47% to 44% in the poll, while Hillary Clinton leads the Republican nominee 47% to 45%. The distinction is insignificant  because both results are within the poll's margin of error.   More »

Shops Closed in Iran for Giving 'Un-Islamic' Do's

Western or unconventional styles are officially out in Iran, where police shuttered over a dozen barbershops in the past 2 weeks for giving “un-Islamic” haircuts. Such practices are forbidden thanks to an edict issued in April through the barber’s union. Eleven salons for women were also closed for license violations, including tattooing, which is forbidden by the health ministry. More »
