      Obama Dials Back Campaigning to Watch Gustav

      (Newser) - Barack Obama curtailed his Labor Day speeches to unions in the Midwest today to keep the focus on the Gulf Coast, asking instead for silent prayer and donations to the Red Cross.       Jerry Lewis Raises Record $64M

      (Newser) - Comedian Jerry Lewis certainly didn't take the day off: his 42nd Labor Day telethon yesterday pulled in a record $64 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. "We did it. We did it. We can go shopping," enthused the 81-year-old showman after pulling in $3 million more than last year's high. The event has raised $1.46 billion since its 1966 inception. More »

      Labor Day Traffic Forecast: Not Quite as Bad

      (Newser) - Nearly 29 million people will travel by car during the upcoming Labor Day weekend, AAA reports—slightly fewer than last year, despite lower gas prices. A gallon averages $2.75, down 10 cents from last Labor Day. The overall number of travelers this holiday weekend is expected to go up, however, thanks to a slight increase in air travel. More »
