Papa John's Hits $1B in Online Pizza Sales

Papa John's passed the $1-billion mark in online pizza orders yesterday, trumpeting growth in Internet sales averaging 50% per year since it debuted the service in 2001. Domino’s and Pizza Hut join the third-place pizza-delivery chain in reporting that the Internet is giving the business new life and increasing their slice of the casual dining pie, reports the AP. Pizza Hut says its online orders have grown sixfold in the last 3 years, and Domino's says its tracking system has given the company a "big bump." More »

      Pizza.com Name Sells for $2.6M

The domain name pizza.com sold at auction yesterday for $2.6 million, netting a tidy little profit for a Baltimore man who bought 14 years ago for $20, the Baltimore Sun reports. Seller Chris Clark held onto the name over the years, making sure to keep up with the $20 annual registration fees. Flour Is Costing a Lot of Bread

Consumers are getting hit in the breadbasket as tight flour supplies push bakers’ costs higher, reports the Los Angeles Times. Think that pineapple-and ham-concoction is a pizza? Not according to Italian law, Julie Reno writes in the Smart Set. Only hand-kneaded dough, rolled to no more than 14 inches in diameter, topped with San Marzano plum tomatoes and baked in a brick wood-fired oven qualifies. La Pizza Polizia crown such authentic Neapolitan pies with Guaranteed Traditional Specialty status: Only two NYC pizzerias have made the cut. More »

      Beer and Pizza Getting Pricey

Even cheap foods like pizza and bagels are getting pricey these days over a mix of inflationary pressures, MSNBC reports. Last year's shocking 4% food price hike was driven by more than gas prices, one analyst says: It's diesel that fuels the trucks and trains that transport goods. "It's everything that gets shipped," he said—which makes diesel costs "much scarier" than the cost of gas. More »
