Pope to Cut Luther a Break

(Newser) - Five centuries after he ignited the Reformation by challenging papal authority, Martin Luther is expected to get a break from—of all people—Pope Benedict XVI. The pope is German and ostensibly that's the only thing he has in common with Luther. Nevertheless, the pope plans a warmer and fuzzier re-evaluation of the monk who divided Christianity in 1517, according to the Times of London. Benedict is expected to argue that Luther didn't intend to divide the Church—only cleanse it of corruption. More »

(Newser) - Harvard is trying out women-only gym hours at one of its facilities to make exercising easier for Muslim women. Will Mac Reject His Radical Pastor's Nod?

(Newser) - Barack Obama gets grilled over unsolicited praise from Louis Farrakhan, but John McCain draws no flak for “proudly” accepting the endorsement of a homophobic, Islamophobic evangelical pastor. Grotesque double standard, Glenn Greenwald calls it in Salon. Tim Russert made Obama “jump through multiple hoops” to disown the Nation of Islam leader, but no one’s complaining that Mac’s “honored” to be John Hagee’s choice, he notes. More »

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton's campaign denies circulating a 2006 photo of Barack Obama wearing traditional African clothing and a turban, even as the Obama campaign blames its rival, calling the incident “shameful, offensive fear-mongering,” the Chicago Tribune reports. The Drudge Report ran the image this morning, saying it had been pushed by Clintonites; the Obama camp says they were trying to make him look un-American. More »

Unmarried, Frustrated, and Turning to Islam

(Newser) - Facing a feeble job market, many Middle Eastern youths can't afford pricey marriages—and end up single, frustrated, and devoted to Islam, the New York Times reports. Several countries are trying to stem the religious tide by funding weddings, but thousands are left unmarried and isolated. “People don’t help you,” a single Egyptian woman said. “It is only God that helps you.” More »

(Newser) - Upset by a right-wing Dutch politician's movie, which portrays the Koran as an inspiration for murder, Iran’s justice minister is asking the Dutch government to ban the film, the BBC reports. The minister called the film, by parliament member Geert Wilders, an unnecessary attack on Islam’s holiest object.
