(Newser) - The McCain campaign gave the boot to veteran conservative consultant yesterday after it came to light that he also was a paid consultant for a tax-exempt political group designed to attack Democratic candidates, Politico reports. The campaign says it never coordinated its activities with the so-called 527 group—which would be against FEC rules—and set a new policy barring any further cross-pollination. More »

Feds Indict Puerto Rican Governor in Finance Probe

Look into campaign funds yields 19 counts

(Newser) - Puerto Rican Gov.Anibal Acevedo Vila was indicted today on 19 counts, including election fraud and conspiracy to violate federal campaign-finance laws, the AP reports. Vila and 12 associates are accused of breaking rules in financing the 2000 campaign that saw Vila elected the territory's Washington rep. Vila says the charges, and the probe that spawned them, are politically motivated. More »

'Ponzi scheme' bizman sought to be part of celeb campaign circuit

(Newser) - Businessman Norman Hsu swindled $60 million from investors across the country and made illegal campaign contributions to Hillary Clinton and others, federal prosecutors say. In a criminal complaint unsealed in Manhattan yesterday, the feds say Hsu broke US election law by reimbursing some of the political donors who participated in his Ponzi scheme, the Washington Post reports.
