      Berkeley Tree-Sitters Finally Climb Down

      (Newser) - The last four tree-sitters climbed down from their perches at UC Berkeley today, ending a 2-year vigil to protest the university's plans to cut down a grove of trees and build a sports facility, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The university will build the facility, but it agreed to set up an environmental review board to oversee future development. Police arrested the four when they descended, but they're not expected to face felony charges. More »

      (Newser) - Early this morning, the city council of Berkeley, Calif., rescinded a controversial declaration that Marine recruiters are not welcome in the city, CNN reports. The council, however, stands by its opposition to the Iraq war.       LA Eyes Ban on New Fast Food Outlets

      (Newser) - There is so much fast food in South Los Angeles, and so much obesity, that city officials are considering banning any new outlets.  A two-year moratorium on new fast-food eateries has been proposed for an area where 30% of adults and 29% of kids are obese (compared with just over 20% and 23%, respectively, for the county overall). “To be honest, it’s all we eat,” one resident told the Los Angeles Times .  More »
