      Jude Law Plugs 'Peace Day' in Afghanistan

      (Newser) - Jude Law stumped for peace in Kabul today, urging all sides in the Afghan war to lay down arms for one day. Visiting with British filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, Law said "Peace Day" on September 21 would give health workers a chance to vaccinate children or deliver food. Gilley and Law won a day of peace last year that allowed 1.4 million kids in Taliban regions to receive polio shots. More »

      (Newser) - Eastern Europe may not be known for its reggae scene, but a small Serbian village has chosen iconic wailer Bob Marley as a symbol of peace for the Balkans. A statue of Marley, who died in 1981, was recently unveiled during a rock festival in Banatski Sokolac, reports the BBC. The crowd included musicians and fans from both Serbia and Croatia. Organizers say it's the first Marley statue in Europe. More »

      (Newser) - A long-lost recording of a Mahatma Gandhi speech has emerged in the collection of an American journalist, the Washington Post reports. In the 1947 speech, one of only two known recordings of the spiritual and political leader speaking in English, Gandhi calls for peace and unity. The day before, he had made a radical proposal for a Muslim to become the first prime minister of a united India. More »

      (Newser) - Police arrested more than 160 protesters today at demonstrations across the US to  mark the fifth anniversary of the launch of the Iraq war, Reuters reports. More than 100 were arrested in San Francisco alone, where demonstrators staged a "die-in" and disrupted busy Market Street.
