      Clues Sought in Madrid Crash

      (Newser) - Investigators are searching through wreckage for clues to why a passenger jet bound for the Canary Islands crashed shortly after takeoff from Madrid yesterday killing 153 passengers, the BBC reports. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion before the crash but officials say foul play has been ruled out. The voice recorders and flight data have been found. There were 19 survivors, including two infants, many in critical condition. More »

      Diabetes Drug Given Strictest Warning Label

      (Newser) - The FDA has applied its harshest warning to the diabetes drug Avandia, declaring the product potentially increases risk of heart attacks. Now marked with a “black box” warning, GlaxoSmithKline’s drug will stay on the market pending a continuing “safety assessment,” the Wall Street Journal reports; FDA officials say the agency remains split on the wisdom of pulling the drug immediately.       Tapes May Play at First 9/11 Damages Trial

      (Newser) - The dramatic last minutes recorded on Flight 93 may be heard at a wrongful death case filed by a victim’s wife, Reuters reports. In the first 9/11 damages case to reach trial, the black box recordings would play sounds of passengers breaking into the cockpit and retaking the airplane from hijackers.       (Newser) - Not only was Jon Corzine not wearing a seat belt, the SUV in which he was riding shotgun was clocked at 91 mph seconds before its crash last week. The trooper driving the New Jersey governor was going 26 mph over the limit on the Garden State Parkway—which he's allowed to do in an emergency. More »
