      Romney Rolls Into SC

(Newser) - Mitt Romney rolled into South Carolina today, hoping to cash in on the momentum from his win in Michigan but positioning himself as the underdog in Saturday's primary. "It would be an enormous surprise if he was unable to win here," he said of John McCain. Romney vowed to "fight for every job we have in this country," continuing the theme of economic recovery that served him well in his native state. More »

McCain Blasts Mailer Attacking War Record

(Newser) - Citing "deceitful smear tactics" by "fringe elements," John McCain's campaign is on the offensive against a flier circulating in South Carolina attacking his war record—an echo of the attacks that derailed his 2000 candidacy. The flier, sent to some 80 newspaper editors, claims McCain betrayed his fellow POWs to get better treatment while a prisoner in Vietnam, reports the AP. Romney Wins on Economic Woes

(Newser) - Mitt Romney campaigned in Michigan as a favorite son, but he beat John McCain by persuading voters he could bring jobs back to the beleaguered state, the Wall Street Journal reports. Romney sold himself as a business executive who could end Michigan's  "one-state recession." He was quick to jump on McCain's suggestion that lost jobs "are not coming back," and his aggressive optimism struck a resounding chord . More »

Clinton, Obama Camps Throw Elbows on Race

(Newser) - The racially charged crossfire between the Clinton and Obama camps continued today, as Bill Clinton said on a radio show he had a "a list of 80 attacks" from the Illinois senator on his wife. Clinton had been asked to respond to a remark made by  BET founder Robert Johnson, in introducing the senator at a black church in South Carolina yesterday, that included a coy reference to Obama's drug history. Obama to SC Blacks: Have Faith

(Newser) - Barack Obama is putting religion over race in the Palmetto State, where almost half of Democratic voters are black—a strategy that has worked for President Bush twice, Politico reports. As in Iowa, Obama has held faith forums throughout the state and even stumped in conservative, white churches. Some sneered that the strategy proves he isn't “black enough,” but recent voting stats are in his favor. More »

      Why Edwards Still Matters

(Newser) - He may have lost Iowa and New Hampshire, but don’t forget about John Edwards just yet, even if he’s not going to win the nomination, writes the Washington Post’s Dan Balz. Trumped by the celebrity and fundraising might of Clinton and Obama, Edwards will likely have to settle for a role as spoiler—but in this year's race, that's no small thing. More »

Romney: 'I Am Feeling Awfully Darn Good'

(Newser) - Hopeful he will win the hearts of New Hampshire's undecided, GOP candidate Mitt Romney was effusive and optimistic about tonight's primary. But the ex-Massachusetts governor stressed upcoming races in case he loses here. He vowed to "connect with Michigan," where his father was governor and where he travels next. "Michigan is very personal for me," he told Salt Lake City's Deseret Morning News. More »

      After NH, What’s Next?

(Newser) - After tomorrow's New Hampshire primary separates the early winners from losers, the trail will change radically, the New York Times reports. South Carolina, Nevada, and Florida will bring more diverse racial demographics into play and turn up the heat on bread-and-butter issues. "All of a sudden you’re playing on a magnified stage," recalls a strategist who worked with John McCain in 2000. More »
