      Warming Will Kill 66% of Calif. Plants Within Century

      (Newser) - If California’s climate warms significantly in the next 100 years the consequences could be grave for the majority of the state’s native plants, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. A team of scientists from UC Berkeley and Duke found that up to 66% of the state’s plants wouldn’t have time to migrate to a higher, cooler elevation if carbon emissions continue at their current rate.       1,000 Flee Raging SoCal Wildfire

      (Newser) - Roughly 1,000 people abandoned 400 California homes today as firefighters battled a blaze in the Sierra Madre foothills, the Los Angeles Times reports. The fire spread through some 400 acres, and containment is not expected for days. Record-setting temperatures are to blame for the blaze marking an early start of the fire season.  "This is not a lazy fire," a fire chief said. "This fire is burning with some energy." More »

      Record Heatwave Hits Arctic

      (Newser) - Record high temperatures have hit parts of the Arctic, triggering a dramatic melt off of sea ice and tundra, and shocking scientists, reports the Independent . Temperatures as high as 72 degrees fahrenheit (22C) on Melville Island, usually one of the coldest places in North America, melted permafrost and set off catastrophic mudslides. "The landscape was being torn to pieces before our eyes," said a member of the team who recorded the fluctuation. More »
