Upshaw Hit Foes Hard, On Field and Off

(Newser) - Gene Upshaw brought the same intensity to his position as head of the NFL players' union as he did to his role as an offensive guard for the Raiders, writes John Clayton for ESPN. "He talked tough and conceded little," says Clayton, crediting Upshaw and his unforgettable "We are the game" speeches of the 1980s for getting a revenue share for players—albeit after devastating strikes—and making them partners rather than just cogs. NFL Union Chief Upshaw Dies of Cancer at 63

(Newser) - Gene Upshaw, the Hall of Fame offensive lineman who, during a quarter century as head of the players union, helped get NFL players free agency and the riches that came with it, has died at 63, the AP reports. "We have to solve it a different way and we will." More »

(Newser) - The medical fund the NFL established in July for its retired players will receive a $10 million boost. The money will be added to the $7 million already in the fund and be used for joint replacement surgery, cardiovascular screening and assisted living. “We're continuing to work on the other needs of retired players,” said commissioner Roger Goodell, according to the AP. Union May Save Vick $22M

(Newser) - Arguing that the collective bargaining agreement signed last year by the NFL player's union protected all bonus money, Michael Vick's lawyers fought the Falcons' ongoing attempt to recover $22 million in bonuses it had paid the quarterback and convicted dog abuser. The CBA is alleged to override any such forfeiture, even if it is permitted in the player's contract. More »
