      Feds Mandate Nation-of-Origin Labels for Meat, Produce

      (Newser) - Grocery shoppers will soon be able to tell their Argentine steak from their Midwest chicken at a glance, as a new federal law mandating nation-of-origin labels kicks in Sept. 30. Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) will cover everything from fruit and nuts to beef, lamb, and chicken, reports the Chicago Tribune, but critics are denouncing the measure as limited and toothless.       Beef Recall Expands to 5.3M Pounds

      (AP) - Nebraska Beef is expanding a recall to include all 5.3 million pounds of meat it produced for ground beef between May 16 and June 26. Federal investigators have linked the company's products to an outbreak of E. coli illnesses affecting 40 people in Michigan and Ohio. Some Nebraska Beef products were sold by grocer Kroger Co., which has recalled ground beef products in more than 20 states. More »

      (Newser) - A worker shown in a shocking undercover video jabbing apparently sick cows to their feet for slaughter was following orders from management, his lawyer said yesterday. The attorney made the accusation as he negotiated with federal investigators to work out a plea deal for his client, reports the Wall Street Journal.       (Newser) - The biggest meat recall in history will put a fork in Hallmark/Westland, the meatpacker’s general manager told the Wall Street Journal. “I don’t see any way we could reopen,” he said. The USDA has said the California company could reopen under the right conditions, but demands that it pay for the meat’s destruction and replacement. “If the USDA wants payment back, we’re dead meat.       (Newser) - American Foods Group voluntarily recalled 96,000 pounds of ground beef after two people in Illinois were sickened from possible E. coli contamination, the AP reports. The affected beef was distributed to companies in Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Virginia. Some of the recalled goods, produced on Oct. 10, have already expired. More »

      Cargill Recalls 1M Pounds of Ground Beef

      (Newser) - E. coli fears led to a recall today of more than 1 million pounds of ground beef from Cargill Inc., Reuters reports. The USDA found the potentially deadly bacteria after testing meat produced October 8 in Pennsylvania and sold in 10 states at stores including Giant, Shop Rite, Stop & Shop, Wegmans, and Weis, the AP says.       (Newser) - In yet another recall of bad meat, Sam's Club has pulled a brand of frozen hamburgers from its shelves after four children were sickened with E. coli. The warehouse chain, owned by Wal-Mart, recalled American Chef's Selection Angus Beef Patties. They have an expiration date of Feb. 12, 2008, and carry the UPC code 0002874907056 Item 700141, the Associated Press reported. More »

      (Newser) - Citing its inability to "overcome the economic reality of a recall this large," Topps Meat Co. announced today it will fold. The nation's largest producer of frozen hamburgers, a stalwart in Elizabeth, NJ, for 67 years, laid off 77 workers, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
