Raiders take McFadden with fourth pick

(Newser) - The two top picks at today's NFL draft were spoiled ahead of time: Everyone knew Jake Long and Chris Long would go first and second. The real drama started with pick #3, in which the Atlanta Falcons chose Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan. The Raiders took Darren McFadden with pick #4, and Glenn Dorsey went fifth to Kansas City, NBC Sports reports. More »

Kansas Crushes UNC to Reach Title Game

Rush's 25 help Jayhawks jump out
to 40-12 lead

(Newser) - Kansas took to the underdog role just fine last night, reports the Kansas City Star . The Jayhawks jumped all over favored North Carolina early, building a 40-12 lead in the first half, and cruised to an 84-66 Final Four win last night. The Jayhawks will face Memphis, which beat UCLA in other semifinal, in the NCAA championship game Monday. Brandon Rush led the Jayhawks with 25 points. More »

LSU Makes It Five Straight Final Fours

Lady Tigers defeat top-seeded UNC in regional final

(Newser) - The LSU Lady Tigers reached their fifth consecutive Final Four by ousting top-seeded North Carolina 56-50 in the women’s NCAA tournament. Sylvia Fowles led LSU with 21 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked and was also named most outstanding player of the New Orleans regional. The loss snaps the Tar Heels’ 16-game winning streak, reports the Associated Press. More »

Hansbrough's 28 point helps Tar Heels into Final Four

(Newser) - North Carolina reached its second Final Four in four years with an 83-73 win over Louisville last night, reports the Raleigh News & Observer . The Tar Heels, who blew an 11-point lead to lose to Georgetown in last season's Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, had flashbacks in the second half against the Cardinals. UNC led by 12 at halftime only to have the Cardinals fight back to tie at 59. More »

UNC Women Come From Way Back for Win

Tar Heels on brink of their third straight trip

(Newser) - Angel McCoughtry did everything she could to lift Louisville past North Carolina today, but it wasn't enough to keep the Tar Heels from a 78-74 win in the women's NCAA Tournament, reports the Associated Press. LaToya Pringle had 27 points and 11 rebounds as UNC came back from 18 down in the first half. More »

(Newser) - Virginia's erasure of an 11-point second half deficit was too little too late, the AP reports.  Even after pulling ahead in OT, 85-81, the fourth-seeded Cavaliers couldn't stop a 7-0 run by fifth-seed Old Dominion, capped off by the Lady Monarchs' Jazzmin Walters sinking a decisive three-pointer with little more than four seconds to play to win it 88-85. Third-seeded Cowgirls move on to the round of 16.

(Newser) - Andrea Riley's free throw with 0.7 seconds remaining gave Oklahoma State a 73-72 see-saw victory over Florida State to advance to the regional semifinals in the women's NCAA tournament, only two years removed from an 0-16 Big 12 season. Riley got to the line after being fouled by FSU's Shante Williams while attempting an awkward buzzer-beating jumper, reports the AP. More »

Nebraska holds off Xavier, Louisville dispatches Miami-Ohio

(Newser) - It looked like the Maryland Terrapins were in danger of being only the second top-seed to ever fall in the first round of the NCAA tournament, the AP reports. KU knocks off Chattanooga, Okla. survive Illinois State

(Newser) - North Carolina barely broke a sweat today in the women's NCAA first round, the AP reports. The Tar Heels dominated from the opening minutes, racking up an initial 21-2 run before finishing 16th-seeded Bucknell off, 85-50. Blue Devils' offense goes cold as Mountaineers advance

(Newser) - West Virginia ended today what Belmont failed to on Thursday: an upset of second-seeded Duke, reports the AP. Joe Alexander had 22 points and 11 rebounds as West Virginia held the Blue Devils to 38% shooting, out-rebounding them 47-27 in the 73-67 victory. Duke has now missed the Sweet Sixteen 2 years running, after going every year from 1997-2006. More »

(Newser) - It would not have been an easy loss for coach Jay Wright to live down, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer , if it had come to that, but his players bailed him out after a costly technical foul with less than three minutes left in regulation that helped Clemson tie their first round matchup in the NCAA Midwest Regional.
