In his first start since high school, Matt Cassel led the Patriots to a 19-10 victory over Brett Favre's New York Jets. Cassel went 16 for 23 for 165 yards but didn't toss a touchdown, the AP reports. Gene Upshaw, the Hall of Fame offensive lineman who, during a quarter century as head of the players union, helped get NFL players free agency and the riches that came with it, has died at 63, the AP reports. Upshaw died last night at his home in Lake Tahoe, Calif., of pancreatic cancer, which was diagnosed only last Sunday, the NFL Players Association said today.

Al Davis has asked Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin to resign and Kiffin has refused, reports ESPN. Kiffin, who coached the Raiders to a 4-12 record in his first season, has instead told Davis to fire him. The pair have been battling over the coaching staff since shortly after the Raiders season ended. Kiffin wanted to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, but Davis wouldn't let him.
