A close Joe Biden aide will take the senator's seat until a special election in 2 years, the Delaware News Journal reports today. Gov. Ruth Ann Minner said she sought Biden's advice in naming Ted Kaufman, who is also a member of Barack Obama's transition team. Some say Kaufman is holding the seat for Attorney General Beau Biden to succeed his father as senator.

Republican governors got their election post-mortem under way today, with leading light Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota warning that the party needs "more than a comb-over." Another rising governor, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, said voters now trust Democrats to control spending and cut taxes more than Republicans. "When the Republican Party is no longer the party of fiscal conservatism," he said, "then clearly I would argue we've lost our way."

A right-wing Austrian politician who sparked controversy with rhetoric viewed as pro-Nazi and anti-Semitic was killed today in a car accident, CNN reports. Joerg Haider, 58, was driving alone when he left the road, hit a concrete post, and flipped several times, said a witness. When Haider's anti-immigration Freedom Party earned enough votes to join a government coalition in 1999, the EU imposed months of sanctions. He broke from the party a few years ago and toned down his comments.

A bomb detonated near Kabul killed an Afghan provincial governor and three others today, Reuters reports; Taliban militants claimed responsibility for the attack. The governor and former cabinet minister, Abdullah Wardak, had helped the US when it toppled the Taliban in 2001. It was unclear whether the roadside attack was a suicide bombing or done via remote control. Wardak’s driver and two bodyguards were also killed.
