Farming Tigers for Profit Best Way to Save Species

(Newser) - Though animal conservationists hail the success of India's Jim Corbett National Park in increasing populations of endangered tigers, Kirk Leech complains in Spiked that numbers continue to decline—and that expanding protected areas for tigers harms indigenous human populations. His solution: for-profit tiger farms, where selling animal parts to meet unrelenting demand can finance more farms and better breeding to prevent extinction. More »

      Siegfried, Roy Adopt Tiger Cubs

(AP) - Siegfried and Roy welcomed five new tiger cubs to their exotic habitat on the Las Vegas Strip yesterday. Siegfried Fischbacher said the new arrivals would be therapeutic for Roy Horn, who was partially paralyzed when a 380-pound white Bengal tiger sank his teeth into Horn's neck five years ago and crushed his windpipe. The two illusionists plan a one-night-only comeback in February. More »

Report Rips Zoo in Tiger Attack

(Newser) - When a 243-pound tiger escaped its pen and began mauling Christmas Day visitors, the San Francisco Zoo was painfully understaffed and ill-equipped to respond to the emergency, according to a new report. "The zoo is too often chasing problems," concluded the independent Association of Zoos and Aquariums of the attack, in which a 17-year-old visitor died and two friends were injured. More »

      Endangered Tigers Fading Fast

(Newser) - The World Wildlife Fund has warned that the world's tigers are in grave danger of extinction, reports the BBC. Experts believe tiger numbers have fallen in half over the last 25 years to as few as 3,500 worldwide, the WWF said. The South China tiger and the Sumatran tiger are in the most danger from habitat destruction and demand for tiger parts for use in Chinese medicine. More »

      Tiger Numbers Plummet in India

(Newser) - At least half of India's Bengal tiger population has vanished in the last five years, according to the latest alarming census of the endangered predators. A Project Tiger conservationist blamed "poaching, and loss of quality habitat and prey," reports AFP. A 2002 survey estimated there were 3,700 tigers in India's reserves and forests, but the latest count found just 1,411. More »

Police Logs Detail Chaotic Response to Escaped Tiger

(Newser) - The first chaotic hour after an escaped tiger at the San Francisco Zoo killed a 17-year-old man on Christmas is revealed in riveting detail in the transcript of the police log released by authorities yesterday. The report shows that zoo employees first thought the injured man who reported the escaped Siberian tiger was crazy, the San Francisco Chronicle reports, perhaps slowing the urgency of the police response. Zoo: Killer Tiger Was Provoked

(Newser) - The victims of the Christmas Day tiger mauling may have tried to climb into the animal’s enclosure, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Thugs Skin Tiger in China Zoo

(Newser) - Officials are searching for the thugs who skinned and beheaded a rare Siberian tiger at a zoo in central China. The female carcass—missing its head, legs and skin—was found outside its pen in Yichang City in Hubei province. Four homemade anesthetic rifles lay nearby. "It is highly possible that the killers anesthetized the tiger, opened the cage and then dragged the animal out and butchered it," said one official. More »
