      McCain Flips on Emissions Standards

      (Newser) - John McCain seemed to flip-flop on auto-emissions standards today, telling a group of General Motors engineers he supported states’ rights to set their own levels, the Detroit News reports. McCain told the newspaper last month he supported a nationwide standard. Automakers support a national standard because they fear the expense of catering to different restrictions in different states. More »

      Governator to Sue Feds Over Emissions

      (Newser) - Arnold Schwarzenegger will sue the federal government after the EPA denied California a waiver that would have allowed the state to cut greenhouse gas emissions in vehicles faster than federal mandates. The California plan would raise fuel efficiency standards to 43.7mpg by 2016; the federal plan 40mpg by 2020. Sixteen other states had signed up to California's plan before the EPA scuppered it, says CNN. More »

      Feds Block California's Tougher Emissions Law

      (Newser) - The Bush administration has refused to allow California and 16 other states to set their own strict standards on tailpipe admissions. EPA chief Stephen Johnson yesterday declined to grant California a federal waiver to impose its own standards on greenhouse gas admissions from vehicles.
