Scarlet Knights close within one game of second straight Final Four berth

(Newser) - Rutgers advanced to the round of eight in the NCAA women's tournament with a 53-42 victory over George Washington, reports AP. Essence Carson scored 25 points to lead the Scarlet Knights and set up a rubber match with Big East rival Connecticut, with whom Rutgers split two games earlier this season. The winner gets a trip to the Final Four. More »

Jayhawks steamroll into the Elite Eight

(Newser) - Kansas had its third straight cakewalk of the tournament, surging ahead of 12th-seeded Villanova early and never looking back in a 72-57 victory at Ford Field in Detroit. The Jayhawks were led by Brandon Rush with 16 points, and Russell Robinson, who had 15 and played excellent defense on Villanova's Scottie Reynolds, holding him to 11, reports the Kansas City Star.   As Louisville Moves On 

Cardinals trounce Oklahoma, 78-48

(Newser) - The Big East sent more teams to the NCAA tournament than any other conference this year, and will have as many as any conference in the Regional Semifinals, too, as three of the eight remain. Louisville is among them, after annihilating No. 6 seed Oklahoma, 78-48. The Cardinals led 44-22 at halftime when they ended the first half with a 26-8 run. That trend continued in the second. Underdog Wildcats roar back from 16 down to beat Georgetown

(Newser) - Davidson star Stephen Curry had no touch early in his team's second round game against Georgetown, the AP reports. The sophomore guard missed 10 of his first 12, and the Hoyas climbed to a dominating lead. But Curry would not be denied, erupting for 25 of his 30 points in the second half and leading underdog Davidson from 16 behind with 15 minutes to play for an improbable 74-70 victory. More »

Nebraska holds off Xavier, Louisville dispatches Miami-Ohio

(Newser) - It looked like the Maryland Terrapins were in danger of being only the second top-seed to ever fall in the first round of the NCAA tournament, the AP reports. Never trail in 84-72 defeat of Siena

(Newser) - Villanova made it look easy today, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Never trailing after a dominant start, the Wildcats notched their third Sweet 16 appearance in four years with an  84-72 triumph over Siena in the Midwest regional's second round. Scottie Reynolds made his presence felt early, netting 15 points in the first 10 minutes for Villanova, and finishing with 25 points and eight rebounds. More »

OK State tops ETSU, Marist roars past DePaul

(Newser) - Jayne Appel posted a career-best 33 points, 29 in the first half, as the Stanford Cardinal crushed first-timers Cleveland State last night, 85-47. Kaley Klein posted 16 points for 15th seeded Cleveland State, who won a mere eight games last year, the AP reports. Stanford will take on either UTEP or Western Kentucky on Monday. As Brook Lopez saves the day with last second shot

(Newser) - Stanford's coach Trent Johnson has a lot to thank Brook Lopez for, the AP reports. With Johnson ejected for after consecutive technical fouls in the first half, Lopez took the reins on the court, bruising Marquette's hopes to the tune of 30 points, including the game-winning shot with 1.3 seconds remaining in OT to give Stanford the 82-81 victory. (Newser) - It would not have been an easy loss for coach Jay Wright to live down, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer , if it had come to that, but his players bailed him out after a costly technical foul with less than three minutes left in regulation that helped Clemson tie their first round matchup in the NCAA Midwest Regional. Notre Dame outshines the Patriots, 68-50

(Newser) - There will be no Cinderella story for George Mason this year in the NCAA tournament, as  Notre Dame beat out the Patriots, 68-50, reports the Associated Press. Despite a great performance by Will Thomas, who scored 25 points, George Mason just didn’t have the same fire that lit them through to the Final Four two years ago, as the Fighting Irish proved too much to overcome.
