Senate Grills FBI on Anthrax, Ivins

(Newser) - Senators cast strong doubts today on the FBI's conclusion that Bruce Ivins acted alone in the 2001 anthrax scare, reports the Washington Post,  with many demanding a more public vetting of the investigation into America’s largest bioterror attack. "There are others out there who should be charged with murder," said Sen. Pat Leahy, himself the target of an anthrax-laced letter. More »

      Men Admit Bigfoot Hoax

(Newser) - Bigfoot hunters will just have to keep looking. Two Georgia men’s story about finding Sasquatch has—surprise!—turned out to be a hoax, Cox News Service reports. Their ruse fell apart when a block of ice containing the “body” melted—leaving behind a rubber monkey suit. The men reportedly then admitted the hoax to a California organization that paid for the rights to their story. They checked out of their hotel and are now lying low, just like Bigfoot himself. Ga. Men Claim to Have Found Bigfoot

(Newser) - Two Georgia men claim to have found a Bigfoot, and say they'll release evidence tomorrow at a press conference, LiveScience reports. Whether they'll display the alleged carcass or simply photographs is unknown, but a well-known Bigfoot hoaxer speaking on their behalf said the body will be studied in a secure, undisclosed location—raising doubts about its authenticity. Did We Slaughter the Neanderthals?

(Newser) - Analysis of DNA from a thigh bone is helping solve the longstanding question of what happened to Neanderthals. Did they simply die off, were they killed by more modern humans—or did the two groups interbreed? DNA from the Neanderthal bone is so different from that of modern humans that interbreeding now appears highly unlikely, the Independent reports, making it likely that our ancestors were to blame. DNA Links Scientist to Anthrax Attacks

(Newser) - Investigators have DNA evidence that links biodefense expert Bruce Ivins to the deadly 2001 anthrax attacks, but the case is largely circumstantial, the New York Times reports. Prosecutors have linked the anthrax used in mailings targeting news networks, newspapers, and Congress with a flask used by Ivins at his Maryland lab, but at least 10 people had access to the flask, a source tells the Times. Ivins is also linked to prestamped envelopes used in the attack, which were sold at a Maryland post office he frequented . More »

'Ironclad' Authority of DNA Evidence Questioned

(Newser) - With odds of a definite match to suspects often cited as high as 1 in 100 billion, the power of DNA evidence in a criminal case is rarely disputed. But new studies are leading some to question whether DNA evidence should be an ironclad determination of guilt, the Los Angeles Times reports. More »

      DNA Clears JonBenet's Family

(Newser) - New DNA evidence in the JonBenet Ramsey murder case has exonerated the entire Ramsey family, the Boulder Daily Camera reports. Scientists analyzed a sample from JonBenet's clothes, using new technology called "touch DNA," and found no match to JonBenet's parents, brother, or anyone in law enforcement databases. The local district attorney apologized to the family for their ordeal after the 1996 murder. More »

      Tyrannosaurus Rex: Tastes Like Chicken?

(Newser) - Dinosaurs are more closely related to birds than reptiles, protein extracted from a Tyrannosaurus rex bone suggests. T. rex collagen, the main protein in bones, is similar to chicken and ostrich collagen but much different than material from alligators and lizards, scientists say. The findings could remap the evolutionary tree according to molecular data rather than bone structure, the Washington Post reports. More »

DNA Used to Nab Criminal Kin

(Newser) - Law-enforcement agencies are using DNA of family members—often without their consent—to identify and convict criminals, the Washington Post reports. Privacy advocates object that it turns family members into unwitting informants, and subjects innocent relatives to “lifelong genetic surveillance” because someone in their family committed a crime. But investigators say it could increase DNA-solved cases by as much as 40%. More »

US Plans to Widen DNA Database

(Newser) - The US plans to significantly widen its law-enforcement database by taking DNA samples from illegal immigrants picked up by federal authorities and from all people arrested for federal offenses, the Washington Post reports. The feds currently collect genetic information only from those convicted of federal crimes. The expanded policy follows the lead of 13 states. More »

Amanda Knox: 'Railroad Job From Hell'?

(Newser) - Amanda Knox , the 20-year-old University of Washington student who's been held by Italian police since November as a suspect in her British roommate's murder, is the victim of a “railroad job from hell,”  an investigator hired by the “48 Hours Mystery” to review the case concluded. "They've put so much into Amanda Knox, they have to convict her now or they look like fools," he says on the show, broadcast last night. More »
