      Democrats Take Aim at Romney

(Newser) - From the way Democrats are acting, they might believe Mitt Romney is the front-runner to become John McCain’s running mate, Alexander Burns writes in Politico. Denver is abuzz with attacks on the former Massachusetts governor: Barack Obama’s campaign manager called Romney a “job-killing machine,” and Deval Patrick, who has Romney’s old job, pointed out the Republican’s neglect of that position. Mass. Trumpets Success of Health Mandate

(Newser) - About 75% of Massachusetts residents who had been uninsured now have health coverage, thanks to the state’s closely watched, near-universal health care mandate, says a new report from Gov. Deval Patrick. Nearly half of the 439,000 newly insured bought private insurance, rather than taxpayer-funded plans, the Boston Globe reports. And the number of patients using emergency rooms for routine treatments has fallen significantly. More »

Mass. Allows Marriages for Out-of-State Gays

(Newser) - Massachusetts will now allow gay and lesbian couples from other states to marry there. Gov. Deval Patrick today signed a law overturning a 1913 measure originally crafted against interracial marriage, the Globe reports. Massachusetts is the second state, after California, to allow same-sex marriages, regardless of residence. A flood of couples is expected from New York, which does not marry gay couples but recognizes unions from elsewhere. More »

Mass. Senate Votes to Allow Out-of-State Gays to Wed

(Newser) - A 1913 law that blocks out-of-state gay couples from marrying in Massachusetts could soon be history. The state Senate has passed a bill that would repeal the law, which former Gov. Mitt Romney used four years ago to stop gay non-residents from marrying in his state, the Boston Globe reports. Supporters of the bill called the law discriminatory and archaic. More »

Gay Daughter No Problem for Mass. Governor

(Newser) - For some politicians—Dick Cheney, say, or Alan Keyes—a gay daughter might be a major inconvenience. But the public coming-out yesterday of Katherine Patrick, daughter of supportive Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, is being praised as a "very powerful statement" by gay-rights groups, and the low-key nature of how Katherine Patrick's sexuality was made public—in a Massachusetts GLBT weekly—was hailed for its sensibility. 'Black Geniuses' Remark is OK

(Newser) - The presidential race is so odd that Geraldo Rivera has pondered "black geniuses" on Fox—which was “absurd in a way that’s new and refreshing," Eugene Robinson writes in the Washington Post . Rivera was talking about Barack Obama and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick last week on "Fox and Friends" when he said, "It's almost as if they went to a camp where these black geniuses got together," Rivera said. Clinton Camp Calls Obama Plagiarist

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton accused Barack Obama of plagiarism today over a speech he gave two nights ago, the Swamp blog reports. Obama retaliated by hitting Hillary with five instances of her robbing his words, including "Yes, we can" and "Bring this country together." But the Illinois senator later admitted to lifting phrases from a 2006 speech by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick. More »

Big Dig's Big Mess Nets Big Settlement

(Newser) - Contractors on the botched Boston construction project dubbed the Big Dig will pay state and federal authorities $458 million for its “gross failures.” But Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff will avoid criminal charges for a fatal 2006 ceiling collapse and won’t be banned from future government contracts, the Boston Herald reports. Massachusetts attorney general Martha Coakley called it “the best possible solution.” More »
