      Georgia Accuses Russia of Bombing Civilians

      (Newser) - Russian troops are targeting civilians in their assault on Georgia, President Mikhail Saakashvili told CNN today. “This is the worst nightmare one can encounter,” he said. “They've been bombing Georgia from numerous warplanes and specifically targeting (the) civilian population, and we have scores of wounded and dead.” Asked if his country was at war with Russia he replied, “My country is in self-defense against Russian aggression.” More »

      Russian Troops Enter Georgia

      (Newser) - Russia entered the fight today between the US-backed republic of Georgia and the breakaway region of South Ossetia, the New York Times reports. Russian tanks rolled into the disputed region to back Ossetian rebels, and Georgia shot down two Russia aircraft, the AP reports. The violence is the worst in years in the Caucasus region, which controls the flow of oil from the Caspian Sea to world markets.       (Newser) - A pair of supected Islamic terrorists attacked a border post in western China and killed 16 paramilitary police officers, hacking some of them with knives, reports CNN, quoting the Xinhua news agency. The two crashed a truck into a group of officers jogging near the station and then lobbed two grenades into a barracks. At least 16 were wounded in the attack near Kashi in the Muslim region of Xinjiang. Both attackers were arrested. More »

      (Newser) - US border agents can seize laptop computers or other electronc devices from any traveler entering the country and keep them indefinitely, even without suspicion of wrongdoing, the Washington Pos t reports. A policy update released by Homeland Security, dated July 16, says agents can keep any information-storing device they please and can share the data with other agencies, "absent individualized suspicion."       (Newser) - Venezuela will return its diplomats to Colombia after last week’s border crisis was largely resolved at a regional summit. Ecuadorean diplomats say it will take longer for them to return, reports the BBC. Colombian forces killed an important rebel leader inside Ecuador last week, provoking a bristling regional standoff.       (Newser) - Hours after Egypt began sealing its breached border with Gaza, Palestinians reopened a new hole in the wall with a bulldozer, the BBC reports. Egyptian security forces had begun using human chains and water cannons this morning to stem the flow of Palestinians, but authorities offered little resistance when the Palestinans countered.  More »
